The core aeration process works like this: we use a special machine to pull plugs about the size of your thumb from the ground throughout your yard. These holes help relieve soil compaction that occurs during hot summer days and “bakes” Southern Indiana clay into hard, dense soil that strangles grass roots. Aeration allows the grass to breathe again and lets in more water and nutrients.

What’s thatch?
A half-inch layer can block what roots need.
Thatch is the layer of living and dead stems, roots and organic matter between green grass and soil. When it grows thicker than about one-half inch, it can prevent oxygen, water and nutrients from reaching the roots efficiently.
Timing matters
Mid-August through October is the best seeding window.
The ideal time to seed your lawn is mid-August through the end of October, with timing adjusted as needed for irrigated lawns. New seed has more time to mature and establish a stronger root system. Spring seeding does not give young seed the proper time to develop before summer heat arrives. Crabgrass pre-emergent interferes with new grass seed, and without pre-emergent applied early in the year, the lawn cannot be properly protected from unwanted grassy weeds.
